This skills programme is critical, and it will enable workplaces across all sectors to meet their legal obligations relating to the provisioning of first aid care in the workplace. In South Africa, employers have a legal obligation to provide adequate and appropriate first aid training to their employees. This obligation is outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993, which requires employers to take reasonable steps to ensure the health and safety of their employees in the workplace. Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to provide and maintain, as far as reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of their employees.
